Former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender retires from football


Former Liverpool, West Ham and Real Madrid right back Alvaro Arbeloa has announced his retirement from professional football.

The former Spain international revealed to Marca that he will be hanging up his boots. He said "it's time to say goodbye."

"Physically I was okay to keep playing." he added.

Arbeloa started his career with Real Madrid as a youth team player. In 2006, he was transferred to Deportivo La Corona before moving to Liverpool, where he made over 90 appearances in three years.

The 34 year-old returned to Real Madrid in 2009, he spent seven years at Los Blancos before moving back to the English Premier League with West Ham United, where he was released after making just three premier league appearances last season.

Alvaro Arbeloa was capped 56 times by Spain national team, he represented the country at the Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland , 2010 World Cup in South Africa  and Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.

The former Deportivo La Corona defender walks away from the beautiful game, having won 11 trophies throughout his professional career. He won 1 LaLiga title, 2 Uefa Champions League, 1 Uefa Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, 2 Copa Del Reys, 1 Spanish Super Cup, the World Cup and Euro 2008 and 2012.
